Las Calandrias

The main house of Las Calandrias is quite large with three bedrooms and two full baths plus very extensive patio, palapa and deck spaces and outside half bath. On the ground floor, large, airy rooms with lots of windows interconnect through open passages for a spacious feeling and ample natural air circulation. Stone walls keep the rooms cool and lots of windows makes for nice air movement on lake breezes alone; ceiling fans take over when no breezes blow.

Las Calandrias living and dining rooms overlooking Laguna BacalarThe dining room connects the kitchen and living room in a continuous space with access to porches front and rear and many, many windows. Comfortable wooden dining room table and chairs are complemented by lots of shelving and cabinetry made from local hardwoods. There is a single step down to the living room through a large open archway where lots of windows and comfortable living room furniture await. In the kitchen, plenty of counter space with natural light from windows makes a large and comfortable work space with more than enough drawers and cabinets for all the pots, pans and dishes needed.

A covered exterior stairway leads to the palapa-roofed patio with dining area overlooking the gardens and parking. Directly off this is another very large open patio with palapa overlooking the lake. The second story suite provides beautiful lakeside vistas from this pair of entry patios — plus an upstairs bedroom balcony. First floor has two covered porches, one L-shaped and facing the gardens and one facing the lake to provide direct access through lush plantings and rockwork to the swim platform and very private dock. The property has well-developed landscaping in superb condition.

Two ground-floor bedrooms (one with king and A/C and one with queen, both with ceiling fans) and a large, comfortable bath sit across a well-ventilated hallway. On three sides, the house has shaded patios for relaxing, dining, or puttering. Furnishings are luxurious, comfortable and tasteful. Lots of wood in windows, doors and archways lend a richness to the rooms and handsome tile work complete the picture.

Upstairs running the entire depth of the house is the master suite: very large bath, large dressing room, large bedroom with private balcony and windows on two sides. The bedroom and dressing room have separate air conditioning. A palapa-covered patio looking out at the lake provides spectacular vistas across, up and down the lake. This shady patio connects to a spacious open patio which joins a large upstairs deck for nearly infinite party or stargazing space. Plenty of sun and shade and magnificent night skies plus beautiful views of ever-changing Laguna Bacalar and the gardens.

The guest house is a large studio apartment with full kitchen and bath plus a good-sized space for use as studio, office or storage area. The kitchen, bath and studio are all nicely tiled and have lots of woodwork and opening windows. The main room is well ventilated and light, large enough for king bed, seating and storage. Kitchen is fully found. Covered parking for one car is at the side of the casita; another covered parking space is near the gate. A palapa perfect for relaxing or projects is between the house and the guest casita. And an outside bath with shower and storage are also nearby.
